Meet Janessa Birch, Logistics and Material Handling Lead- Gogo Business Aviation’s December High Flyer!
How long have you been at Gogo and what do you do?
I have been working at Gogo for 3 ½ years. I started as a material handler. After that, I moved into logistics and am now the lead for the logistics and material teams.
How did you get into logistics and material handling?
I worked for a company in Maryland as a receptionist. The work load for the position was not enough to keep me busy so I asked for more responsibilities. Throughout the four years that I worked there. I learned shipping, receiving, material handling and production planning. My experience at that job was very enjoyable. After leaving Maryland, I realized that working in an operations environment was something I wanted to continue to pursue as I expand my career.
What do you love about your job?
The opportunity for growth. Gogo is really good at providing every opportunity it can to support career growth for employees. In addition to being given the opportunity to progress through the role I was hired into, I have also been given the opportunity to choose my career-growth plan regardless of my current position.
What is the best career advice you have been given?
Always stay true to yourself no matter where your career takes you. Being yourself got you where you are today, and being yourself will get you where you want to be tomorrow.
“Relax. Nothing is under control” – Unknown
Why did you pick Gogo over another company?
I have worked in the aerospace industry since 2009. When I was looking at Gogo, it seemed like a perfect opportunity to continue working in an industry I love, while expanding into telecommunications.
FROM ANDREW STONE, DIRECTOR OF MANUFACTURING:
“Gogo is lucky to have Janessa! She always comes to work with a smile and her positive attitude creates a team environment that everyone enjoys: she truly embraces the extraordinary harmony core value. With her deep understanding of processes, she continuously brings significant improvements to our organization. Her recent accomplishment of improving the RMA process with cross-functional departments is just one example of the added value she brings!”
What is your favorite Gogo perk?
My favorite perk would be all the group events Gogo holds. We have amazing people working here and I enjoy the opportunities to work with my teammates and coworkers across departments, as well as the opportunity to spend time with everyone at team-building events.
What do you do for fun when you are not a work?
I enjoy hiking and camping in the summertime, and when I am not doing something outdoors I am completing various types of DIY projects.
Favorite things about Colorado?
Colorado is absolutely beautiful and is never short of opportunities for new adventures. I love the versatility we have here. We can go spend the day in the mountains exploring the outdoors, or head to Denver to enjoy more of the city scene or check out the many music and food festivals that are taking place.
How do you find a balance between work and home?
A good part of our day is spent at work. A day at work can be eventful and provide for lots of stories! When I get home from work I like to share the highlight of my day with my family. More recently, we have decided that we will pick one story highlighting the best thing that happened at work that day to share with each other. After that, the rest of the evening is focused on personal and family time. Once we started doing this, I realized how much of our evening was being taken up by talking about what happened at work that day. This has helped to focus my attention to the best part of my day and then continue that positivity to focus on me and my family.
What is an interesting or unknown fact about you most people don’t know?
About five years ago, I taught myself how to use a flow wand (also known as a levitation wand). This is a type of poi that was inspired by the magician’s dancing cane. The best I can explain it, is dancing with a floating wand. About two years ago, I got a fire flow wand and started dancing with fire. Dancing with fire is an amazing experience and something I love to do.
