Meet Dylan Woods – Gogo Business Aviation’s April High Flyer!
How long have you been at Gogo and what do you do?
I have been at Gogo since January 20th, 2014, so 3 years and 3 months! I started as an intern in our Commercial Aviation division and right after graduation, I received an offer to join the Business Aviation engineering team in Colorado as a Software Developer.
How did you get into engineering and where did your love of programming come from?
I began studying programming in 2009. I actually struggled with programming at first! It took me a couple of years of studying and working before I really began to love building software. Deciding to be an engineer came even later. It wasn’t until a year or so into my job at Gogo that I really started to understand what it meant to be an engineer. It’s a creative problem solving mindset that I am very grateful I have found and nurtured in my life.
What do you love about your job?
The technical challenges of our products, and connection with my colleagues are the best parts for sure. I’m someone who always needs a challenge. I’ve found building software is a constant supply of challenging problems. I’m also someone who thrives on community, so the bond between myself and my peers is just as important. There is no balance in this type of environment without real human connection.
FROM CHRIS RIPPE: Sr. Manager, Engineering
“Dylan has been a model for us as to what an individual can achieve when given opportunities. Initially he came to BA after serving as an intern on the CA vision application. In the past 3 years, he has served in critical roles delivering the moving map solution, the vision DRM conversion, and delivering the new 4G product. Now, he is in a position where he leads a book club and helps mentor others. Dylan is always pushing our team thinking outside the box and not accepting the status quo.”
Favorite projects you’ve worked on here at Gogo?
Building the status and configuration applications and supporting APIs for the platform was really interesting. It’s been the most intimate relationship I have had with networking, Wi-Fi technologies and embedded software. It’s been an interesting challenge to synthesize these complex systems into simple easy to use web applications.
What is your favorite Gogo perk?
I have the freedom to take time off to go on adventures and come back recharged!
What do you do for fun when you are not a work?
Outdoor adventures, snowboarding, music and dancing.
Favorite things about Colorado?
The nature: the mountains, the trees … It’s what keeps me balanced.
How do you find a balance between work and home?
Nature and music. I wouldn’t be a functioning member of society if I couldn’t recharge in the wilderness or listen to music.
What is an interesting or unknown fact about yourself most people don’t know?
I turn plants into synthesizers with electronics.
“The most important decision you will ever make is to be in a good mood.” -Voltaire
