Meet September’s High Flyer: Business Aviation’s Sada V.

Meet Sada Velayutham- Gogo’s September High Flyer!

How long have you been at Gogo and what roles have you had here?

This is my third year with Gogo! I have been with Gogo Business Aviation since July 2015. I started as a senior java engineer and now I work as technical lead with the Business Systems team.

Why did you pick Gogo over another company?

I attended a networking event that Gogo sponsored in their office in Broomfield and I really liked the environment!  Gogo had just opened this beautiful facility. I had spent most of my career working for large-size companies and enterprises, so for my next chapter, I was looking for an exciting technology company that was neither too big nor too small. Gogo works on exciting technologies and solutions and is the right size where I can make an impact.

How did you get into software development and do you remember how you picked this career?

I was introduced to computer programming in college. Though I wasn’t very good at it in the beginning, I was very interested in trying out new technologies and learning new programming languages. Once I started getting the hang of writing programs to solve complex problems, I really enjoyed it.   When given the opportunity, it wasn’t very hard for me to make the decision to choose software development as a career.

“Ever since joining Gogo, Sada has been a key contributor.  He has had a hand in every major project the Business Systems team has rolled out and was the primary designer and architect for the Business Services Gateway, the ground-based services layer of the platform that has launched Gogo Business Aviation to an entirely new level.  On top of all that, Sada is a great guy to get a beer with.  We are very lucky to have him at Gogo!

What do you love the most about your job?

The thing that I love about this profession is the sense of accomplishment it gives me. Computer programming is an amazing tool that we use to solve challenges people face in their daily life.  It is very rewarding to know that the systems we design and develop make someone’s job a little easier and their life a little better.

What is your favorite Gogo perk?

Being a family person, I very much value the flexible office hours and the discretionary time off.

What do you do for fun when you are not at work?

I love hiking and Colorado is the perfect place for that! I hiked my first 14er (one of Colorado’s 14,000-foot tall mountain peaks) last year and I am planning to do another one next year. I am also a big fan of standup comedies: I often binge-watch my favorite shows featuring (Richard) Pryor, (George) Carlin, (Chris) Rock, and many more!

Favorite things about Colorado?

The beautiful mountains, 300+ days of sunshine and its friendly people!

How do you find a balance between work and home?

One of the things I value most about Gogo is the work-life balance. I have an 18-month-old son and it is important to me that I spend quality time with him. While there have been times when I’ve had to work some long hours and occasional weekends, that is not a common practice here, which I appreciate about Gogo.

What is the best career advice you have been given?

One of my past managers used to say, “If you find yourself doing the same task more than twice a day every day, you must see how you can automate it.”  It has helped me become much more efficient.

What is an interesting or unknown fact about yourself most people might not know?

I get this urge to learn something new about every 6 months- it may be a new sport, a new language or a new skill! For example: I’ve learned tennis, as well as Spanish and German!

Favorite quote?

“The sign of intelligence is that you are constantly wondering. Idiots are always dead sure about everything they are doing in their life.” ― Sadhguru
