On May 9th, Gogo will take to the skies over New York for our yearly media demonstration flights. These flights will be on board our Boeing 737-500 test plane “Jimmy Ray”, named after our company founder.
The purpose of the plane is to act as an airborne lab for our engineers, allowing them to develop and test the next generation Gogo experience in the same environment as a commercial plane.
As regular readers of our blog will know, we’ve been working hard on a variety of technologies designed to improve the already excellent experience of our 2Ku satellite Internet system. The focus of our flights will be to demonstrate our new modem and HTS (High Throughput Satellite) connectivity which will form the next generation of 2Ku.
We are still in the beginning stages of testing this technology. In fact, we have only flown on this satellite 3 times, however, based off the results we’re seeing in flight tests, we are extremely excited to show it off to the media during our demonstration flight.
In our recent quarterly earnings report, we expanded on our revolutionary concept of delivering 15,98,98 on commercial flights. The image below shows what this new industry standard means:
We continue to improve on these metrics, and our new modem and HTS satellite coverage will take this to another level. It’s too early for us to say what a passenger will experience in terms of speeds to their device other than it will improve significantly from 15 Mbps.
Of course, we still have some work to do before you’ll find this on your next flight, but even though we saw a wide range of speeds, the top speed measured on our flight today could be the highest ever measured in-flight.
