No matter how many frequent flyer miles you’ve earned in your lifetime, air travel often remains a stressful activity. Even the most experienced travelers are easily worn-down by airport regulations, various boarding hassles and jet lag.
Fortunately, modern technology provides a variety of solutions for these problems, including many that are free. All you need is an internet connection and a mobile device.
White Noise Free
White noise is a simple way to block distractions and give you peace of mind during a flight. The term white noise refers to the static your television or radio makes when you tune to an unused frequency. These days, technology has taken us well beyond mere static.
Modern mobile apps like White Noise Free not only provide basic white noise, they also give you access to other ambient sounds such as jungle noises, thunderstorms and oscillating fans. The free version offers over 40 different sounds to choose from and you can create playlists that combine them into a custom sequence. If you wish, you can even record and add your own sounds to the playlist.
The app includes a simple alarm clock that lets you determine how long the sounds are played. You can set it to wake you up in eight hours for a full night’s sleep. Or you can set it for a specific flight time snooze.
For a $1.99 upgrade, you get access to more alarm clock features and the ability to run the app in the background. White noise is a good way to block out distractions when trying to get work done in mid-flight or for a power snooze, so the upgrade is easily worth the price.
White Noise Pro 2.0
Another highly rated free white noise generating mobile app is called White Noise Pro 2.0. It has similar features to White Noise Free, including a full variety of ambient sounds and white noise variations. The sounds are high quality, but the variation in volume between different sounds will require you to make adjustments.
White Noise Pro 2.0 opts to simplify its features by offering an interface geared toward one-hand operation. The app offers a timer where you can set the length of time you want an ambient sound to play.
Users are encouraged to mark sampled sounds as favorites so they can be retrieved easily. Like the White Noise Free app, you can also record your own ambient sounds and add them to your favorites list.
The app is completely free and there is no upgrade option. Be forewarned, however; the associated website is not in English, so support may be more difficult to come by.
Less Stress, Better Travel
Listening to ambient or white noise while traveling is a simple and effective way to relieve some of the stress traveling can create. The great thing about White Noise Pro 2.0 and White Noise is that you can get that stress relief for free.
